University Pathways
How a BC diploma opens doors to universities in Canada and around the world.
A BC Dogwood Diploma with strong Grade 11 and 12 marks is a recognized route to universities in Canada and around the world.
The guidance below is general. Admission requirements differ by country, university and program, and they change from year to year, so always check the admissions page of each university you plan to apply to.
Canadian universities
- Students usually apply directly to each university, or through a provincial application centre such as OUAC for Ontario.
- Admission is based mainly on Grade 11 and 12 percentages, especially in the courses a program requires.
- Many programs require specific Grade 12 courses, for example Pre-Calculus 12 or Chemistry 12 for science and engineering.
American universities
- Most universities accept the Common Application or their own online application.
- Applications usually include the transcript, essays, teacher recommendations and activities outside class.
- Many universities are test-optional for the SAT and ACT, but policies differ, so check each one.
Other destinations
- United Kingdom: applications go through UCAS. Universities state their requirements for Canadian or BC applicants, often as a Grade 12 average and specific subjects.
- Australia: entry is usually based on the Grade 12 average, with applications made directly to the university.
- Hong Kong: students with a non-local curriculum apply through each university's non-JUPAS admissions, which list requirements for Canadian diplomas.
IELTS, TOEFL or a waiver
Universities in English-speaking countries require proof of English. Some accept several years of study in English, or a strong Grade 12 English mark, in place of a test such as IELTS or TOEFL. Others require a test from students who studied outside an English-speaking country. The rules differ by university, so check early and plan time for a test if one is needed.
How students can prepare
- Choose Grade 11 and 12 courses with your future program in mind, since many programs require specific courses.
- Keep marks strong in Grades 11 and 12; these are the marks most universities look at.
- Keep a record of activities, awards and service; many universities ask about them.
- Your official BC transcript lists your courses, percentages, letter grades, credits and provincial assessment results.
